Summer Email

5/31/2018

Good Morning Jones-Payton Swimmers and Parents,

I hope this email finds everyone well as we prepare to head into the summer. I know that the 2018-2019 season is not for another six months but in lieu of having an early meeting, I wanted to send out a bit of information regarding summer camp, workouts, and a few odds and ends.

First, this summer we are running a Jones-Payton swim camp from July 16th-20th. Coach Vrettos and I have completely revamped our plan and have structured a camp that will focus on drill/technique work, functional strength training, team building, and forming a bond between both Jones-Payton teams. I know that many of you are likely swimming on your own or with a team this summer, but this is hopefully a chance to build team chemistry and welcome new members to the group.

More information can be found at the following link: https://www.jonescollegeprep.org/apps/pages/index.jsp?uREC_ID=333477&type=d&termREC_ID=&pREC_ID=624516

Second, I have attached two documents for anyone that may be interested. The first, is a sheet that has every workout the varsity team did over the previous season. If you are looking for workouts to use this summer it may be a great doc to steal from. Also, I know that some of you have gym memberships or are conducting lunch workouts to stay in shape. I attached a ten day dryland plan that may provide some tips or advice for staying/getting into shape.

Third, I wanted to reach out regarding fundraising. I am already trying to put the wheels in motion for some fundraising opportunities for the fall, but I am open to any options or ideas anyone may have. The parent groups at both schools have been fantastic, but I would like to try to do more. While I hope to do another shred class and am working on getting the team to work the concession stand at a Northwestern football game, any other ideas are definitely appreciated.

Fourth, any member of the class of 2019 that is looking for a letter of rec is more than welcome to ask as early as possible. Summer is a great time to get a jump on the college application process. If you would like me to help in any way please just ask. Further, for anyone that is looking to potentially swim in college please do not hesitate to reach out so that we can begin a conversation. Over my 12 years of high school and club coaching I have learned a lot about the process and have made some great connections. I am always going to be your biggest advocate and will share any knowledge I have.

Finally, thank you again for all you do. Coaching this team is truly a pleasure and I cannot wait to build on the success we had last year. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, ideas, or concerns and if you would like to forward this on to any others please do so.

All the best,

Coach Paul

Swimmers and Parents,

Just a quick note as we head into the meet this evening and the holiday break. First, attached to this email, you will see a meet lineup for tonight, as well as a meet lineup for those swimming at the Highland Park Pentathlon on 12/27. Hopefully this will help with watching the meet, and also planning for next week.

Tonight - 12/22 - Niles North - 9800 Lawler Ave, Skokie, IL 60077 - 5:30 Start Time - 3:00 Bus
This meet will run as a 3 level meet, JV2, JV, V. It is a great chance to see some of our city competition, as well as see some of the fruits of all the training we have put in.

Wednesday - 12/27 - Highland Park Pentathlon - 433 Vine Ave, Highland Park, IL 60035 - 10:00 Meet Start - 8:00 Bus
This is also a 3 group meet with 18 of our swimmers competing. The list of swimmers participating in the meet is attached to this email. Each swimmer will race five times (a 50 of each stroke and a 150 free) and their places will add up to points. Top 6 in each group will medal. This should be a fast, fun, and different experience.

Practice Change!!!
12/26 we are no longer at UIC. I was able to secure space at Fosco Park - 1312 S. Racine Ave Chicago, IL 60608- for free as opposed to what UIC was charging. This cash savings is great and we will still run practice from 2:15-4:00. This practice is still only for those competing in the meet on 12/27.

Remaining winter schedule - 12/28, 12/29, 01/2, 01/3, 01/4, 01/5 we will have practice at Jones from 8-11:30 for all levels. There will not be security to let swimmers into the building, so all swimmers must arrive between 7:45 and 8:00. Swimmers that arrive late will not be allowed to enter the building! We will be in the water for 2 hours, and will then do dryland so plan accordingly.

12/30 We will practice with Whitney Young at Whitney Young (varsity only), time TBD but likely 7-10. 12/31 we will swim at Jones from 8:30-10:30 for all levels.

All of these dates and times can be found on the calendar at jonespaytonswimming.com please use this calendar as your source of information. The calendars put out by the schools are out of date and tend to be off on events. If there is a discrepancy on the jonespaytonswimming.com calendar then reach out.

Fund Raising:
If you take a look at the attached flyer, you will see we have our first fundraising opportunity set up. Shred 415 in the Roosevelt Collection is running a donation only class that will support the team! Any parents or friends of the program are welcome to sign up, and please share the flyer with anyone you can. The boys will not be participating in the class, but will be there to cheer everyone on before and after!

Apparel:
As a team we have a small number of Grey and Blue JP shirts available for sale. The shirts are mostly mens mediums and smalls, but any fan of the team can order one for $10. If interested either email me, or have your son bring $10 to practice. First come, First served.

Also, I have organized more apparel through a company called Lansing Sports. Apparel can be purchased through the following link https://goo.gl/forms/KTBBWKHYK6ku7ScI2 via google forms. I will place an order for merchandise 12/29 so you must fill out the form by then. Payment can take place any time between now and January 6th.
Again I rambled on longer than intended but hopefully the information is beneficial. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday and please enjoy the time with loved ones and friends alike. Boys, I appreciate all of your hard work and dedication. Parents, thank you for the support of your sons, this team, and for believing in this great program.

All the best and go Jones-Payton!

Paul

Swimmers and Parents,

Let me again say thank you for all of the hard work and effort the past few days. Thursday was a real rollercoaster against NCP but it sure did feel great to come away with the first win against them in program history. Also, Saturday was a blast for everyone involved and I am incredibly excited with how well the team performed. Hopefully both meets are just signs of things to come. With that said, this may be a long email so please read everything and bear with me.

This Week:
Friday we swim at Niles North against NN, Lane Tech, and Whitney Young. This is a great meet for us to see some city competition in a great pool. The bus will again leave at 3:00 and Payton Boys are already released based off of the permission slip from last week. Jones boys will have an email sent to their teachers on Wednesday. The meet starts at 5:30 and should be a lot of fun!

Because of the meet, we will not have JV practice Friday morning, however all other practices and times are as usual. Varsity swimmers must remember to make it to at least two mornings. We have had the illness bug pop up, but please plan ahead.

Fund Raising:
If you take a look at the attached flyer, you will see we have our first fundraising opportunity set up. Shred 415 in the Roosevelt Collection is running a donation only class that will support the team! Holiday Schedule:
The holidays are when the struggle of the building being closed really causes some issues. However, I think I have pulled together a schedule that makes the most sense. Here are the important points. Saturday 12/23, practice at Jones from 8:30-11:30, after that we are off until 12/26 at 2:15 at UIC. Also, 12/26 will be the only day we swim at UIC and we will swim from 2:15-4:00.

12/27 we have a meet at Highland Park High School. I hope to have the roster finished by Wednesday and can let individuals know if they are swimming. The bus will leave for HP from Jones at 8:00 am with a meet start of 10:00. This meet will be fast and we will be back at Jones by around 1:00. Those not swimming in the meet will have the day off.

12/28, 12/29, 01/2, 01/3, 01/4, 01/5 we will have practice at Jones from 8-11:30 for all levels. There will not be security to let swimmers into the building, so all swimmers must arrive between 7:45 and 8:00. Swimmers that arrive late will not be allowed to enter the building!
12/30 We will practice with Whitney Young at Whitney Young (varsity only), time TBD but likely 7-10. 12/31 we will swim at Jones from 8:30-10:30 for all levels.

The calendars put out by the schools are out of date and tend to be off on events. If there is a discrepancy on the jonespaytonswimming.com calendar then reach out.

Results:
The results from York and NCP are also attached, and you can find them both under the results tab on jonespaytonswimming.com for future reference.

I said this would be a long one but hopefully it helped clear up a few things. As always, please do not hesitate to reach out with any issues or concerns that may arise.

Spirit Week Information!

11/30/2017

Welcome to Blue and White week! This upcoming week, 12/4-12/7 will be our first ever intrasquad spirit week. Throughout the week we will work on team building as we prepare for our upcoming intrasquad meet on Thursday 12/7.
All Jones-Payton swimmers will be assigned a spot on either the Blue team or the White team (school has no bearing here). The idea is that each team will work together to win a series of contests and competitions taking place Monday-Thursday, culminating in the intrasquad meet. The hope is that each team is able to bond, get to know each other, and have fun as we prepare for our first “competition” of the year.
Each contest will be scored and the winner of each event will have points added onto their team’s overall intrasquad meet score. The contests for the week are as follows
Monday - Clothing Relay - A relay consisting of one swimmer from each grade will compete in a 200 freestyle relay while wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
Tuesday - In Water Tug of War - Groups of 6 from each team will compete in 3 rounds of in water tug of war, each athlete may only compete once.
Wednesday - Belly Flop Contest - 4 volunteers from each team will compete in belly flops. The coaching staff will judge according to the criteria of “smacking noise”, “groans from the peanut gallery”, “redness”, and “perpendicular entry”. (bonus points for costumes)
Thursday - Team Color Day - Points will be awarded to the team that has the most members dressed in their team color. Creativity is encouraged!
Overarching contest - Instagram Likes - This contest spans Saturday through Thursday. Each team is encouraged to take instagram pictures with at least 3 members of their team and tag jpswimanddive and #jpswimanddive. The picture that has the most likes at the end of the week will earn 10 points to winning team, with 5 points for the pic with the second most likes and 3 for third. Remember, you are representing Jones-Payton and all pictures should be appropriate!
Bonus Points for pictures the fit the following criteria or include the people mentioned
        School Administrator
        Chicago Landmark
        “Taking Your Mark” in Public
        Whole Blue/White Team Photo
        Exercising in Public
        A Scene From a Movie
Thursday we will tally up all the points and will have our intersquad meet beginning at 4:20. Again, swimmers are encouraged to dress in their team color to the “meet”. Each swimmer will compete in at least 3 races and we will still be done at our usual 6:15 slot. Parents, you are more than welcome to attend and I hope this becomes a great Jones-Payton tradition.
Go Jones Payton!

Weekly Update

Swimmers and Parents,

We are a little over a week away from the first official day of the boys swim season. The first official practice is slated for 11/20 at 4:00 in the Jones Natatorium. The first three practices of the week will serve as a "tryout" for all swimmers. We hope to not cut any swimmers, but depending on numbers, spacing, and ability that is a possibility and I just want to be as transparent as possible. With that said, my goal is to include all interested swimmers, from all ability levels. Further, V, JV, and FS will be announced 12/1.

As for other information to get out there, please make sure all documentation has been turned in to either the Payton or Jones athletic departments. Payton swimmers need to get their green sheet from the Payton AD before they are cleared, and Jones swimmers need to turn in all info to the Jones AD to be added to the "okay" list. No swimmer will be allowed to get in the water on the 20th without a submitted physical and concussion form.

Regarding the calendar, please check out not only the meet schedule, but the practice calendar on jonespaytonswimming.com for information. The calendar is going to change from time to time due to building availability and I will do my best to give a week of notice whenever there is a change. To that end, there are a few changes for this week. Due to parent teacher conferences I want to amend a few things.

Optional practices for the coming week:
Sunday 11/12 8:30-10 Jones Natatorium
Monday 11/13 5:50-7:00 6th Floor Weight Room
Wednesday 11/15 5:50-7:00 6th Floor Weight Room

Parent Meeting
Due to the parent teacher conferences on 11/16 I would like to reschedule the parent meeting from 11/15 at 6:00, to 11/21 at 6:00 in the Jones Natatorium. Hopefully these changes work with everyone and provide the best opportunity possible.

Lastly, please check jonespaytonswimming.com for apparel and updates. All swimmers need a team suit prior to our first meet. Also there are other items that are definitely worth taking a look at. I will place a tshirt order for all swimmers the first week of practice.

Thank you again for all of your support and I cannot wait for the start of a great season!

Go J-P Swimming!
