Swimmers and Parents,
Welcome to our first Race Day! Well sort of at least… I am incredibly excited to see how the boys race this evening and hopefully this provides a barometer of what to expect at Northside a week from today. If you plan to attend this evening, we will begin around 4:25 and will still be done by our normal practice time.
With that, there are a few notes to get across regarding the next week and a half, as well as schedules, fees, and communication.
Go JP Swimming and Diving!
Just an FYI, but coach Vrettos caught what has been going around and is out sick today. Because of that we have to change things a little bit. First, both drylands are canceled in that I cannot be two places at once. Second, Varsity, we will get in the water around 3:45 and will go until 5:45. Hopefully this allows you to get home a bit earlier tonight.
Second, Coach Vrettos should have reached out to 6-8 JV swimmers that will work with Varsity at the 3:45-5:45 slot. All other JV swimmers get the day off. I know this is not ideal right before our Blue vs. White meet tomorrow but it is the best we can do with the space we have.
The belly flop contest will still take place near the beginning of practice.
Have a great day and Go Jones-Payton.
Welcome to Blue and White week! This upcoming week, 12/4-12/7 will be our first ever intrasquad spirit week. Throughout the week we will work on team building as we prepare for our upcoming intrasquad meet on Thursday 12/7.
All Jones-Payton swimmers will be assigned a spot on either the Blue team or the White team (school has no bearing here). The idea is that each team will work together to win a series of contests and competitions taking place Monday-Thursday, culminating in the intrasquad meet. The hope is that each team is able to bond, get to know each other, and have fun as we prepare for our first “competition” of the year.
Each contest will be scored and the winner of each event will have points added onto their team’s overall intrasquad meet score. The contests for the week are as follows
Monday - Clothing Relay - A relay consisting of one swimmer from each grade will compete in a 200 freestyle relay while wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
Tuesday - In Water Tug of War - Groups of 6 from each team will compete in 3 rounds of in water tug of war, each athlete may only compete once.
Wednesday - Belly Flop Contest - 4 volunteers from each team will compete in belly flops. The coaching staff will judge according to the criteria of “smacking noise”, “groans from the peanut gallery”, “redness”, and “perpendicular entry”. (bonus points for costumes)
Thursday - Team Color Day - Points will be awarded to the team that has the most members dressed in their team color. Creativity is encouraged!
Overarching contest - Instagram Likes - This contest spans Saturday through Thursday. Each team is encouraged to take instagram pictures with at least 3 members of their team and tag jpswimanddive and #jpswimanddive. The picture that has the most likes at the end of the week will earn 10 points to winning team, with 5 points for the pic with the second most likes and 3 for third. Remember, you are representing Jones-Payton and all pictures should be appropriate!
Bonus Points for pictures the fit the following criteria or include the people mentioned
“Taking Your Mark” in Public
Whole Blue/White Team Photo
Exercising in Public
A Scene From a Movie
Thursday we will tally up all the points and will have our intersquad meet beginning at 4:20. Again, swimmers are encouraged to dress in their team color to the “meet”. Each swimmer will compete in at least 3 races and we will still be done at our usual 6:15 slot. Parents, you are more than welcome to attend and I hope this becomes a great Jones-Payton tradition.
Go Jones Payton!
Please remember that there is a parent meeting tonight at 6:00 here at Jones. We will meet in the pool and will then head down to 5034.
Optional pre-season dryland workouts start tomorrow morning at Jones and will run from 6-7 a.m. with shower facilities open afterward. These workouts will run every Tuesday and Thursday morning for the next 3 weeks. The main reason I am doing dryland as opposed to in water workouts is that many athletes are already with club teams, and dryland provides additional strength and conditioning for all athletes.
Also, I plan to run optional morning in water practices over the next 3 Sundays for any athlete that would like to get a little more work in. These will also be held at Jones and will run from 8:30-10:00 a.m. While all of these workouts are optional, I do encourage anyone that is looking to come out for the team and feels as though they may be out of shape to try to make a few of them. It is a great way to shake off some of the rust and also prepare for November 20th.
As for the information covered at the meetings, here is a brief rundown for all potential Jones-Payton Swimmers.
Jones Payton Swimmers and Parents,
I just wanted to reach out again to let everyone know that we are just about a month away from the Jones Payton summer swim camp. This is for any incoming or returning Jones Payton swimmer that would like to work on technique and conditioning. The camp will also give all swimmers an introduction to the coaching staff and will prepare everyone for what promises to be a spectacular 2017-2018 season.
