Swimmers and Parents,
Welcome to Meet Week! I cannot explain how excited I am for us to finally get up and race this coming Thursday at Northside College Prep and Saturday at York High School. It is clear that our team is rounding into form and I think that both of these meets will allow us to flex our muscle. With that, here is the info on each meet. Lineups will be completed in the next day or so.
Thursday 12/14 vs. NCP at NCP. Meet Start 5:00.
There will be an early release for all swimmers and divers. Payton athletes need to get down to Jones as quick as possible for our 3:10 bus departure. Jones Students will also be excused from their classes early. Athletes should wear team apparel (shirts will be given out ahead of time) and should also bring water/necessary gear.
This meet will run as a Varsity and Junior Varsity meet. Each athlete is allowed to swim a maximum of 4 events with caps at either 2 individuals and 2 relays or 1 individual and 3 relays and every athlete will compete in at least two events. Parents, I hope to see as many of you as possible, and please come sporting your best navy blue or white.
After the meet, there will be food and snacks provided by parents for the bus ride back to Jones. I cannot thank all of you that signed up, and I greatly appreciate the work of Leslie Christo in organizing it all. If a swimmer intends to ride home from the meet with a parent, please make sure that you turned in the transportation form from the beginning of the year, and all athletes must clear their departure with the coaching staff.
Saturday 12/16 at York High School in Elmhurst. Diving Warm Ups 7:00 with a diving start of 8:30 - Swimming Warmups 10:30 with a swimming start of 12:00.
This meet is a varsity only invitational with only the following swimmers attending. Any swimmer not on this list has the remainder of the weekend off. Those on the list need to plan to attend.
Christo, Ejzak, Franchi, Gohres, Gunn, Herbst, He, Kuo, Luskasiewicz, Maldonado, Miller, Munoz, Olson, Onate, Otto, Thakur M., Thakur W.
I have attached the meet information to this email as well that shows meet order as well as the other teams competing. This meet is a chance to get used to a sectional format meet ahead of break. There will be some great competition for not only our individuals, but also our relays. All swimmers need to arrive at Jones by 10:00 on Saturday and must take the bus to York. Hopefully, we will arrive by 10:45 and will warm up from 11:00-noon. After the meet, the bus will again, take the boys back to Jones.
Odds and Ends
We will take team pictures tomorrow a little after 4:00 with the help of Tony Gadomski. Make sure your hair is looking fresh!
The winter break calendar will shift somewhat in the next few days, but I will send an update soon. Also, please be sure to check the website for results for both of the upcoming meets.
Also, make sure you have ordered team apparel. I have heard that there were a few delays and I sincerely apologize for the issues. Further, if you have paid for caps make sure to get them from Coach Vrettos or myself. If you would like to purchase a cap please also just ask the staff.
With the holiday season and all the craziness it brings, attendance and communication are imperative. I understand that things come up, but communication with the coaching staff is key. Failure to disclose information regarding conflicts or missed practices will not be tolerated.
Lastly, I attached a document from wildkit aquatics that charts the top times in the state throughout the season. If you look at the document, or this link https://illinoisaquatics.com/toptimes/times_show/index/M you can see some of the swimmers we will race over the next few meets, as well as over the course of the year.
As always, do not hesitate to reach out with any questions, concerns, or comments. Swimmers, keep working hard. Parents, keep supporting this great group of young men.
Swimmers and Parents,
Welcome to our first Race Day! Well sort of at least… I am incredibly excited to see how the boys race this evening and hopefully this provides a barometer of what to expect at Northside a week from today. If you plan to attend this evening, we will begin around 4:25 and will still be done by our normal practice time.
With that, there are a few notes to get across regarding the next week and a half, as well as schedules, fees, and communication.
Go JP Swimming and Diving!
Just an FYI, but coach Vrettos caught what has been going around and is out sick today. Because of that we have to change things a little bit. First, both drylands are canceled in that I cannot be two places at once. Second, Varsity, we will get in the water around 3:45 and will go until 5:45. Hopefully this allows you to get home a bit earlier tonight.
Second, Coach Vrettos should have reached out to 6-8 JV swimmers that will work with Varsity at the 3:45-5:45 slot. All other JV swimmers get the day off. I know this is not ideal right before our Blue vs. White meet tomorrow but it is the best we can do with the space we have.
The belly flop contest will still take place near the beginning of practice.
Have a great day and Go Jones-Payton.
Welcome to Blue and White week! This upcoming week, 12/4-12/7 will be our first ever intrasquad spirit week. Throughout the week we will work on team building as we prepare for our upcoming intrasquad meet on Thursday 12/7.
All Jones-Payton swimmers will be assigned a spot on either the Blue team or the White team (school has no bearing here). The idea is that each team will work together to win a series of contests and competitions taking place Monday-Thursday, culminating in the intrasquad meet. The hope is that each team is able to bond, get to know each other, and have fun as we prepare for our first “competition” of the year.
Each contest will be scored and the winner of each event will have points added onto their team’s overall intrasquad meet score. The contests for the week are as follows
Monday - Clothing Relay - A relay consisting of one swimmer from each grade will compete in a 200 freestyle relay while wearing jeans and a sweatshirt.
Tuesday - In Water Tug of War - Groups of 6 from each team will compete in 3 rounds of in water tug of war, each athlete may only compete once.
Wednesday - Belly Flop Contest - 4 volunteers from each team will compete in belly flops. The coaching staff will judge according to the criteria of “smacking noise”, “groans from the peanut gallery”, “redness”, and “perpendicular entry”. (bonus points for costumes)
Thursday - Team Color Day - Points will be awarded to the team that has the most members dressed in their team color. Creativity is encouraged!
Overarching contest - Instagram Likes - This contest spans Saturday through Thursday. Each team is encouraged to take instagram pictures with at least 3 members of their team and tag jpswimanddive and #jpswimanddive. The picture that has the most likes at the end of the week will earn 10 points to winning team, with 5 points for the pic with the second most likes and 3 for third. Remember, you are representing Jones-Payton and all pictures should be appropriate!
Bonus Points for pictures the fit the following criteria or include the people mentioned
“Taking Your Mark” in Public
Whole Blue/White Team Photo
Exercising in Public
A Scene From a Movie
Thursday we will tally up all the points and will have our intersquad meet beginning at 4:20. Again, swimmers are encouraged to dress in their team color to the “meet”. Each swimmer will compete in at least 3 races and we will still be done at our usual 6:15 slot. Parents, you are more than welcome to attend and I hope this becomes a great Jones-Payton tradition.
Go Jones Payton!
Please remember that there is a parent meeting tonight at 6:00 here at Jones. We will meet in the pool and will then head down to 5034.
Optional pre-season dryland workouts start tomorrow morning at Jones and will run from 6-7 a.m. with shower facilities open afterward. These workouts will run every Tuesday and Thursday morning for the next 3 weeks. The main reason I am doing dryland as opposed to in water workouts is that many athletes are already with club teams, and dryland provides additional strength and conditioning for all athletes.
Also, I plan to run optional morning in water practices over the next 3 Sundays for any athlete that would like to get a little more work in. These will also be held at Jones and will run from 8:30-10:00 a.m. While all of these workouts are optional, I do encourage anyone that is looking to come out for the team and feels as though they may be out of shape to try to make a few of them. It is a great way to shake off some of the rust and also prepare for November 20th.
As for the information covered at the meetings, here is a brief rundown for all potential Jones-Payton Swimmers.
